Poland had a full celebration of joy and triumph after winning against Switzerland in a penalty shoot-out 5-4. Poland was able to score in the first half with Jakub Blaszczykowski having a breakaway finish on the 39th minute.
Switzerland was able to hang-on tying the game on the 82nd minute via a header of Xherdan Shaqiri on the 82nd minute.
Polish president Andrzej Duda tweeted this on the win “Congratulations to the national team for this historic achievement. But maybe next time with no such thriller, please :):)”.
Grzegorz Krychowiak who is one of the key players in the team remains calm knowing there is more work to be done —
“In my opinion if we already thought that we had accomplished something, we wouldn’t have advanced over the Swiss. It is a historical event, Poland are in the quarter-finals for the first time.
But I think this only proves the ambition of our team, that we aren’t satisfied with the minimum, but want to fight for the biggest objectives.”
Krychowiak was the last player to take the penalty shot — “It is certainly a big responsibility. Not only on me, but on all the takers. We are aware that these five kicks decide if we play in the next phase or not. But you have to turn off nerves, do your thing and I think the team did a great job.”
Krychowiak message to their fans — “Yes. I hope it’s just the beginning and that we still have more to celebrate.”
Xherdan Shaqiri of Switzerland tweeted this out after the loss —
It was a pleasure?????@UEFAEURO https://t.co/ZwxGeAKztE
