The legend of Muhammad Ali

Many people know about Boxing Legend Muhammad Ali, but do you know about Olympic Games Legend Muhammad Ali? Read on for a boxing profile of this great Olympic Medalist.

Muhammad Ali has also been known as Cassius Clay in his lifetime, but he was actually born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr.

Ali was a world heavyweight boxing champion that fought his way into the country and the world’s affection. Outspoken and unrelenting, Ali began his boxing career back in 1954. Ali, then known as Clay, won 6 Golden Gloves contents in Kentucky, 2 golden gloves titles that were national and 2 Amateur Athletic Union Crowns.

It was at the Summer Olympics in Rome in 1960 that he won a gold medal. He later threw that gold medal in the Ohio River when he found that racism in Louisville was rife. It was in 1960 that he became a professional boxer.

It wasn’t long before he became the heavyweight champion, picking up the title in 1964. He was the underdog in this content with the renowned Sonny Liston, however Clay taunted his way through 5 rounds, winning the title. It was in 1964 that Clay changed his name to Muhammad Ali after becoming a Black Muslim.

Ali has been controversial for most of his life. It was in 1966/67 that Ali was stripped of his heavyweight championship, had his boxing license taken away from him because he bluntly refused to partake in the Vietnam War. Regardless of his controversy and his outspoken nature, Muhammad Ali was a talented and gifted boxer.

In 1970, Ali started boxing again but had to go to Atlanta to fight. Georgia had no boxing commission and so Ali was able to fight despite his previous ban.

In 1971, Ali fights against Joe Frazier the heavyweight champ in Madison Square Garden. Ali loses to Frazier in the 15th round. It was in June this year that the Supreme Court reverses the decision of his ban due to his draft evasion, and Ali fights again.
Ali gets his heavyweight title back in 1974 after knocking out George Foreman in Zaire. He successfully used his famous rope strategy against him and let Foreman tire himself out while Ali conserved his energy and then attacked.

Ali and Frazier meet again in the ring in the Philippines in 1975. The two champions fight until they are bloodied and battered. The battle between them is long and ferocious, eventually in the 15th round, Frazier cannot continue and Ali wins.

In 1978, Lai has an outstanding career record of 55 wins to two losses. He loses his winning belt to Spinks, but 7 months later, Ali wins back his belt from Spinks. Ali decides to retire from his lucrative boxing career in 1979 but comes back out of retirement in 1980.

In 1984, Ali was sadly diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and he begins his slow and long deterioration. In 1996, Ali carried the Olympic torch to the lighting of the cauldron in Atlanta in the Summer Olympics. Muhammad Ali was given another gold medal to replace the one he threw away three decades earlier.

Golf Tip - How To Improve Your Backswing

Every golfer should invest some time and effort into fine tuning their backswing. Although there are many golf tips that can help develop better aim and form, the best advice is to stick with the basics. This holds true for beginners and amateur alike.

Mustering as much power and accuracy as possible while maintaining form and balance is the goal for every golfer. To accomplish this, you must be able to give the ball everything you’ve got, but without what is commonly referred to as “coming over the top”.

That describes a swing flaw which causes the clubhead to veer off to the outside of your target line during the downswing. The result? A horrendous slice.

Come From The Inside

The best way to avoid such a shot is to learn how to avoid coming over the top, thus keeping your clubhead from moving outside of the target line. This can be accomplished by simply working on a technique which is opposite of coming over the top: come at the ball from the inside.

More accomplished golfers can do this each and every time they try, but coming at the ball from the inside may be easier said than done for the beginner golf player. Practice, practice, practice is the key and once you get the hang of it, you can rid yourself of that terrible slice shot by making impact with the ball from a downswing which comes from the inside of the target line ever so slightly.

Train Yourself To Target The Inside

There are drills that you can practice which will help you train yourself so that you can come from the inside on your swing whenever needed. Below is a simple training procedure known as a swing path drill:

1. Take 3 tees and placed them into the turf approximately 3 to 4 inches apart from one another, and in a perfect line at a 45° angle with your target line. If you are a right-handed golfer then the line should be pointing to your left foot. Make sure that you have enough room in between each tee so that you can swing the club through.

2. Now it is time to find your swing path. Take out your 5-iron and initiate a few swings by attempting to hit the top portion of the middle tee. In order to do so, your clubhead must pass between the outside tees in a pathway best described as “in-to-out” in order to avoid contact with them.

By practicing this technique and hitting the middle tee in this fashion on a consistent basis, you are making contact correctly from the inside. If you happen to hit the outside tees then you are still coming over the top and need more practice on your swing.
