Ginny Trasher, the Bubbly Teen Who Won Rio Olympics First Gold Medal

in Olympics

Teenage American Ginny Trasher made waves early on when she won the first gold medal in Rio Olympics on Saturday in the Women’s 10M Air Rifle event.

Ginny is a Sophomore engineering student at West Virginia University who led the Mountaineers to their 18th NCAA team rifle championship as well as 4th straight title.

Ginny has momentarily celebrated in interviews having that bubbly personality as she knows she needs to refocus for her next event on Thursday August 11.

“I have to go refocus for my next match, After I shoot that match, I’ll be going back, straight to classes for my sophomore year,”. She notes that classes start immediately — “They start the day after I get back.”

Thrasher beat out China’s Du Li, the 2006 World Champion had to settle for silver. China’s Yi Siling brought home the bronze for her country.

Air Rifle requires extreme precision repeated over and over again. Trasher who averaged 10.4 during qualification describes it as —

“It’s a sport of precision. Picture a pencil, and if you take the eraser of that pencil, that’s the very middle of the circle. And then if you took a period in size 12 Times New Roman font, and you put it in the middle of that pencil eraser, that is the 10. So, I have to hit that dot at 10 meters to shoot a 10. Now that’s just a 10.0, if I hit that dot it’s just a 10.0, and then if I hit in the very exact center it’s a 10.9”

“I mean it’s not an Olympic sport for nothing!” saying it with her usually bubbly self.

Ginny Trasher has been training for five years, what seemed to be a short time to become an Olympic gold medalist. However, shooting comes natural to her and probably because it is a family thing with her father in the Air Force and grandpa loves deer hunting. Ginny was introduced to shooting when her grandpa took her to one of his deer hunting trips which led to joining the high school air rifle team.

Ginny loves everything about the sport of shooting from practicing, competitions and everything else about it — “For me, I think that the best part about shooting is you get out of it what you put into it and I’ve had a great five years, I absolutely fell in love with the sport of shooting, and I love practicing, I love competing, I love everything about it.”

Given that this was her first Olympics she didn’t created the buzz and expectations of winning the first Gold Medal in Rio Olympics and for Team USA however, what happened, happened and she was proud of the outcome —

“Knowing that I had the first gold medal in the entire Rio 2016 Olympics, that was the moment when I thought I am so proud, I am so proud of being American, I am so proud to stand on that podium, to listen to my nation’s anthem and to just be able to represent, and start off this Rio 2016 games on such a positive note.”

On her plans on future Olympic games she notes — “I have three more years of NCAA eligibility, and then I’ll be shooting the next year after that aiming for Tokyo.”

The gold won by Ginny the United States’ third Gold Medal in women’s air rifle, the last time they won it was 16 years back by Nancy Napolski-Johnson in 2000.

Chris Bosh New Medication Should Allow him to Play

in NBA

It has been two years since Chris Bosh has been diagnosed with a blood clot and since then the Miami Heat medical team has not cleared him to play in fear of his health which also ultimately threatened his career.

Even with this medical findings, Chris Bosh insisted he wants to play but the Miami heat organization think otherwise. The disagreement between Chris and the Heat have created a huge riff between them to the point that Chris looked for assistance from the player union to intervene.

Because of the blood clot, Bosh is taking blood thinners which makes it more dangerous for him to go back to playing because any physical blow to his body can cause severe bleeding.

According to Bosh a new medicine gives him a window of 8-12 hours of playtime which could fit in the schedule of his NBA games including practice time.

But even if he stays on the thinners, Bosh has tried to convince the Heat to allow him to play while taking a new medication that would be out of his system in 8 to 12 hours, or by game-time, thus lessening or eliminating the inherent risks of playing a contact sport while on thinners. As we reported last month, the Heat rejected that idea late this past season, angering Bosh. And it’s unclear if Miami would be receptive to that now.

From where we stand Bosh is on a time leash for this health and the Heat’s franchise. There is no long-term plan for this but rather a short-term activity of being able to play in the NBA and get some quality minutes off Bosh. Bosh last played on February of 2016 which means if he doesn’t go back to court because of health reasons, 1 year from now on February 2017 his salary will be off the books and can be used for the team’s salary cap. If he does return and suffer another blood clot then the team will have to wait another year that his salary would not be accounted on the salary cap.

From a Heat organization standpoint, Bosh number of years is down to probably 1 to 2 more years, they would rather keep him health, pay his salary due and get the team to look forward to another era.

For Bosh, there is nothing to prove here, get health, stay health, it is what it is.

Valentina Shevchenko Defeats One-Time Sensation Holly Holms

in UFC

Valentina Shevchenko was supposed to be Holly Holms pathway towards regaining her title back but instead Valentina had this fight as her pathway to the same goal. The 17-time World Muay Thai Champion won by unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 49-46) as she dominated the striking game against Holms by hitting 82 significant strikes to Holms 54.

Holly Holms shot to fame when on UFC 193 on November 15, 2015 she stopped UFC sensation and undefeated Ronda Rousey. Ronda was said to be the most dangerous fighter in the world without a weapon and very few expected Holly Holms to win let alone finish Ronda in a dominating display of strikes and kicks.

Holms delivered Rousey her first career defeat and the fight was said to be the Upset of the Year for 2015. Holms who is an 18-time Boxing Champion was still unknown until UFC 193 and her rise to fame was expected to keep on rising with the expectations of a series of wins to follow.

Having defeated the undefeated, there was no one expected to challenge Holms in the succeeding fights and her first title defense was against Miesha Tate on UFC 196 whom Ronda defeated twice already. UFC 196 turned out to be another upset once again as Miesha sunked a rear naked choke on Holms in the final round to get the win. Although it was not a dominating performance and Holms could have won on decision, it was still a bitter lost for the champion.

Prior to the fight with Valentina Holms has this sentiment —

I don’t want to, to have my career based around one fight, I don’t wanna live of the moment of winning the belt, and I don’t wanna sulk into the moment of losing the belt, I went into the gym the next week, and was training, and pretty much cried after every training or during training, but i want to get there and deal with it, I was gonna be honest with myself, I don’t want to look at it and say, oh well, you know, you win some, you lose some, no, i don’t want to lose any,

The fight with Valentina Shevchenko is a road she has to take to get a title shot —

this weekend is the film fight, everything is riding on this

.

As UFC bills Valentina — “Valentina decorated, 17 time world champion muay thai”

Holly Holms knows this about Valentina —

Valentina is a very good, very good striker , she is, got a lot of knees, elbows, kick, she is also very good on the clinch, very heavy on tough, every fight i feel i can’t lose, there is so much riding on each fight, that i know that i have a really, realy tough opponent in front of me, she is, she is no joke, she looking at the champ now, nunes fight was Shevchenko, i though a longer fight would have gone to Shevchenko, and this is a 5 round fihgt, this is not an easy fight for me, i definitely feel like there is extra on there, she is the one with the belt, i know on Saturday i don’t want anything else, i promise

It was a very tough fight for Holly Holms but Shevchenko wanted it more —

“My strategy was to do everything I know, to put all my heart, all my power, everything I learned in more than 20 years in martial arts, and I did it”

Valentina is now calling out current title holder Amanda Nunes who is the only fighter to defeat here in the Octagon — “Amanda is a good fighter, she has a good standup and ground game, and of course I want a rematch for the title belt,”

Holly Holms knew her hands was full for this fight —

“I knew she was a counterpuncher, we were ready for that; she’s a tough girl, I knew that,” a gracious Holm, now 10-2, said. “I knew I had my hands full with this fight. I knew it was a really big challenge. What can you do? I knew it was a competitive fight. I could have done more, I’m disappointed in myself, and I take nothing away from her. She was very tough.”

In the first round Holly looked to have the fight in control when she landed a right hand on Valentina that produced a knockdown with three minutes remaining, Valentina came back up and scored a takedown with 90 seconds remaining.

This was a good fight as Holm is known to be aggressive on her punches while Valentina didn’t let up and her counter punching technique continued to equalize whatever Holm threw at her.

Holly Holms’ road to the title belt just became Valentina Shevchenko’s road. It would not be a surprise should Valentina be given a title shot against Amanda Nunes who defeated Miesha Tate. The quest for the Bantamweight title got very interesting and Valentina is now in the mix.
